Luke was drawn to the patent profession due to the wide variety of technologies that the profession gives exposure to. He has always enjoyed learning about technologies that have a useful and real-world purpose and so the patentability requirement for inventions to have “industrial applicability” means he enjoys learning about such technologies on a day-to-day basis. At Haseltine Lake Kempner, he has enjoyed having the opportunity to work with inventions that will soon be in the consumer market and whilst gaining an understanding of how valuable such inventions are to a client’s business.
Luke joined HLK in 2016 as a trainee patent attorney in the Tech team after obtaining his Master’s degree from Cardiff University.
He has a strong scientific background in physics from the University of Liverpool, where he obtained a first class undergraduate degree. His Master’s degree was a cross-disciplinary course encompassing Physical, Biological and also Chemical aspects. Luke obtained the highest mark on his Master’s degree program. During his Master’s degree he also completed a two-month placement at a diagnostic materials manufacturing company based in South Wales.
Whilst at HLK, Luke has gained experience in drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications relating to a wide range of physics, electronics and communication-based technologies such as mobile communications, audio signal processing, medical devices, printing applications, sports performance analysis and software-related inventions. He has also undertaken a month-long secondment at one of HLK’s clients, where he gained a further appreciation for a client’s needs and the challenges faced by an in-house legal team.
Luke enjoys almost all things sports-related, particularly those related to the Welsh rugby team. He is also regularly found training for various running and cycling events.
